This steamed sponge cake is one of the sweet dim sum dishes you can order. Its soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture is a perennial favourite with dim sum veterans whilst its straight forward description is a safe bet for newcomers.

The ma lai goh comes without fuss but its understated appearance belies its importance when something light and sweet is needed to finish off a perfectly filling dim sum lunch. Though it's found in most Cantonese dim sum selling restaurants, we're still left wondering - does it come from Malaysia?
